Recent Accomplishments

Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst:

• Led fight for Jessica's Law with mandatory 25 year sentence
• Initiated Texas Children First, including: steroid testing for high-school athletes, heart defibrillators in public schools, stronger penalties for internet predators, and criminal background checks for teachers
• Worked to balance a $10 billion budget shortfall, without raising taxes, while protecting essential services
• Passed nationally recognized tort reform legislation
• Led the Governor's Task Force on Homeland Security and implemented legislation that better prepares Texas when it come to detecting, deterring, and responding to terrorist threats
• Passed the Defense of Marriage Act to support marriage between one man and one woman
• Passed legislation that has lowered escalating homeowners' insurance premiums
• Passed the "B-on-Time" loan program, providing zero interest loans to college students who graduate on time with a B average
